Latin American Environmentalist Day: Citizen Participation in Environmental Protection

Every November 17 is commemorated as Latin American Environmentalist Day, a date that highlights the importance of individuals and communities in protecting the planet. Although the commitment to environmental challenges, from biodiversity loss to climate change, is usually associated with specialists or large institutions, reality shows that sustainability depends, to a large extent, on the daily actions of citizens.

In this context, the results of the Third Recycling Habits Survey 2025, conducted by Vida Circular together with ALPLA and P&G Mexico, reveal a clear trend: Mexican society is more willing than ever to get involved in actions to protect the environment. The study shows that 48.1% of people in Mexico actively participate in recycling or community clean-up initiatives. In addition, 40.1% of the population states that they would like to contribute more to caring for the environment, although they consider that they still need more information to do so. In addition, 32.4% prioritize environmental care in their daily decisions.

These data reflect that environmental awareness is growing, but also that there is a key opportunity to strengthen education, guidance and collaboration between sectors. As Sandra Gazca, spokesperson for Vida Circular, pointed out: "Caring for the environment cannot fall solely on specialists or authorities; it is a shared responsibility. The Third Recycling Habits Survey 2025 shows this; every effort counts, and the fact that almost 50% of the population has been involved in recycling or cleanup actions reflects that environmental awareness is gaining strength in our communities."

Latin America: a region with unparalleled natural wealth

The commemoration of Latin American Environmentalist Day takes on special relevance in a region such as Latin America and the Caribbean, recognized for its extraordinary biodiversity. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), this area is home to 40% of the planet's species and almost a quarter of the world's forest area. It is also home to seven of the world's most biodiverse countries.

This wealth presents an invaluable opportunity, but also an enormous commitment: to conserve and protect unique ecosystems that depend not only on public policies, but also on the active participation of society.

Community actions driving change

Vida Circular works to strengthen the bond between citizens, schools, companies and authorities, promoting initiatives that bring sustainability closer to people's daily lives. These efforts allow more communities to integrate responsible practices, expand their knowledge and become involved in concrete actions for environmental protection.

1. Community cleanup and recycling actions

Cleanup and recycling days have become one of the most representative activities of citizen commitment. Through them, citizens participate in keeping public spaces clean, separating waste from their homes and promoting the correct classification of waste in schools and communities.

2. Reforestation and care of green areas

Planting trees and maintaining parks and natural areas is another pillar of environmental education. With the participation of students and families, these activities help to conserve green areas in cities, strengthen ecosystems and promote a culture of care for natural resources.

3. Environmental education and dissemination of best practices

Access to information is fundamental. For this reason, Vida Circular promotes talks, workshops and information campaigns that seek to strengthen knowledge about sustainable habits and responsible use of resources. This educational work is a direct bridge so that more people feel able to contribute in an informed manner.

4. Collaboration with organizations and authorities

Cooperation between sectors is essential to build more far-reaching solutions. Through partnerships with authorities and organizations, Vida Circular promotes programs and actions that allow us to join efforts, improve processes and broaden citizen participation.

Sustainability as a shared responsibility

The Day of the Latin American Environmentalist reminds us that protecting the planet is a collective task that involves communities, schools, companies and authorities. Every action, no matter how small it may seem, contributes to maintaining the region's natural wealth and building communities that are more responsible with their environment. From proper waste separation to participation in reforestation programs, citizen commitment has the power to transform our reality.
