New Plastic Collection Center in Tlalpan Boosts Recycling and the Circular Economy
With the aim of expanding recycling infrastructure and facilitating proper waste separation, Vida Circular, in collaboration with the Tlalpan Mayor’s Office and the companies participating in this initiative, inaugurated a new Plastic Collection Center at the Deportivo Vivanco.
This permanent facility will allow community members to drop off their plastic waste so it can be recovered and reintroduced into new production cycles, thereby helping to strengthen the circular economy.
A New Space to Promote Plastic Recycling
With this opening, Vida Circular now has its second Plastic Collection Center. The first was set up in the Iztapalapa municipal district, with the goal of making recycling more accessible to more people and strengthening the infrastructure needed to keep materials in use for longer.
The new Plastic Collection Center will have the capacity to recover about 400 kilograms of plastic waste per month, with an annual goal of five metric tons.
In addition to promoting the reuse of materials, it is estimated that this recycling effort will prevent between 10 and 12 metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
Infrastructure to Strengthen the Circular Economy
The opening of this facility is the result of a collaborative effort between Vida Circular and the companies that are part of this platform, including ALPLA, Colgate, Braskem Idesa, Mayapack, and Indorama, as well as other partners committed to developing solutions that strengthen recycling infrastructure.
The goal of this collaborative effort is to facilitate the recovery of materials, promote environmental education, and help accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
Waste That Can Be Dropped Off at the Collection Center
The Plastic Collection Center will accept materials that can be reintroduced into recycling processes, including:
- PET: water and soda bottles.
- HDPE: packaging for home care and personal care products.
- PP (No. 5): lids, cosmetic containers, and medicine bottles.
Proper separation of these materials facilitates their recovery and allows them to continue to be part of new production processes.
The Value of Recognizing Waste as a Resource
During the opening ceremony, Sandra Gazca, ALPLA’s Director of Sustainability and Executive Director of Vida Circular, emphasized that recognizing the value of waste allows us to stop viewing it as trash and instead see it as a resource that can be reintroduced into the economy.
According to this approach, promoting recycling generates environmental benefits by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills, lowering emissions, and building more sustainable communities.
For her part, Tlalpan Mayor Gabriela Osorio Hernández emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, industry, and citizens to develop sustainable environmental solutions that bring recycling closer to communities.
A recycling network that continues to grow
The opening of this new facility is part of Vida Circular's strategy to expand the infrastructure for plastic recycling and encourage public participation.
Through initiatives like this, the platform aims to foster a culture in which waste is recognized as a valuable resource and recycling is part of everyday life.
The new Plastic Collection Center in Tlalpan represents another step toward strengthening Mexico City's recycling infrastructure.
By facilitating the proper separation of waste and promoting its reintegration into new production cycles, this initiative contributes to the efficient use of materials and helps advance the circular economy.
Collaboration among industry, government, and the public demonstrates that building lasting solutions requires working together to expand recycling opportunities and strengthen an environmental culture based on the value of resources.
