Circular Economy in Action: from Waste to Resource with Indorama Ventures
When talking about industrial sustainability, people often think of large investments or complex technologies, but the real change can start with day-to-day decisions within industrial plants, such as how water is treated, how waste is managed, how energy is consumed and how each employee is involved in actions that make a difference.
The Indorama Ventures plant, located in Querétaro, is a great example of an industrial operation that is managed through environmental commitment, innovation and circular economy.
It has been able to address current environmental challenges such as water scarcity, waste management and energy efficiency.
What are the main pillars of Indorama Ventures?
One of the strongest pillars of Indorama Ventures' plant is its focus on its circular economy within the industry. Instead of operating on a linear model (produce-use-dispose) as other industries commonly do, this company has adopted a cycle where materials return to value even after their initial use.
One of its flagship products is FuTuRePET® post-consumer recycled resin, made from collected and reprocessed PET bottles. This initiative stems from the goal of recycling 100 billion bottles per year by 2030.
Thanks to its advanced infrastructure, the plant transforms waste into highly functional inputs for the food, pharmaceutical and personal care industries, thus fostering the beginning of a new cycle for certain wastes.
Water Harvesting and Reuse: An Initiative to Care for the Vital Element
Querétaro has been identified as a state with a high water problem, which is why the responsible use of water becomes a crucial action. In response to this problem, the Indorama Ventures plant has implemented a comprehensive rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment system.
In 2024, more than 65,600 cubic meters of treated water were recovered and reused in processes such as industrial cleaning.
Energy Efficiency
Another key point is its energy efficiency. Through process innovation and implementation of global standards, the plant has managed to manage energy use at every stage of production, making use of efficient motors, intelligent automation and clean energy sources to carry out its operations.
Each of these efforts has been recognized and has been awarded a seal of environmental excellence by SEDESU.
Organizational Culture with a Sustainability Approach
Every change starts from within, which is why Indorama not only limits itself to its processes or machinery, but has also promoted an organizational culture where each member of its team participates in internal environmental training programs and alliances with local authorities and organizations.
This integrated approach where technology, infrastructure and culture come together allows the industrial plant to offer environmentally friendly transformation solutions.
Sustainable Plants for the Chemical Industry
Indorama Ventures is an example that operating a plant can have a sustainable approach, making an impact not only economically but also environmentally. Each of its practices in circular economy, responsible use of water, energy efficiency and PET recycling are a replicable example for other industries, not only in Mexico but worldwide.
Reminding us that industry should not be at odds with sustainability. Today more than ever, every company must have a vision with social and environmental commitment, thus generating a positive impact. Today, sustainability practices should not be optional but a fundamental part of the internal processes of each industry.
